The Emerald City

Posted 26th June, 2010 by

Hello lovelies!  Sorry for the lack of postings.  I am still having MAJOR computer issues.

So anyhoo, I am in the States!  And loving it!  First stop was Seattle.  Well, actually it was LAX.  I had a giant glass of wine in the hopes it would make me sleepy.  It didn’t.  I was awake for like 40 hours or something ridiculous.

Seriously a long long flight.  I couldn’t wait to get out of airports.

4 hours later, I was in Seattle.  This is such a great city.  Really diverse and full of interesting people and great food.  And the scenery!!!  It’s so darn pretty!!

We started at historic Pike Place Market.  It was pretty awesome.  The signage is really cool and vintage-y.  I’m not a typography nerd but I was totally geeking out.  Greg and Trev would have been proud.

Sadly this is the only photo I have of Pike Place as the memory card was corrupt and destroyed most of the photos from Seattle.  I am crrrraaaanky!  But anyway, you cannot miss this place if you go to Seattle.  The produce is amazingly fresh.  The fruit, vegetables and seafood is all just perfect and just looking at it makes your mouth water.  The fish mongers throw the fish around, yell little rhymes and are just generally pretty awesome.  I had a fish thrown over my head!  There are also plenty of little restaurants to eat at in the area that are amazing.  My number one pick in the maccaroni and cheese from Beecher’s.  I think they put a pinch of cayenne in it.  It’s incredible!!!

This is right next to Pike Place on the harbour.  There was a lovely place to sit and have lunch, which is exactly what we did!

Ol’ fashioned lemonade and a big ol’ bag of cherries.  One of the things I was super excited about coming to States was berry season.  I aways get so sad when the cherries are gone after Christmas so having them in the middle of the year is such a treat.  I ate the whole bag.  Mr A on the other hand, had oysters.  BLECH!

Oh and how cute is my new straw cloche??!  I picked it up at Urban Outfitters and I’ve already worn it a whole bunch.  LOVES!!!

So, I had all these great photos with all the cool vintage signs (including the adorable Crumpet Shop), cute outfits and the super fun night I had at Sinner Saint Burlesque (who were amazing.  I was especially impressed with their MC, Nicole Lucas.  She was so funny and fabulous!) but they have all been eaten by the evil camera.  So I will leave you with a little something that made my day.  Lately I have been obsessed with sideshows.  Not the pierced and tattooed nipple stretching sideshows of today but Victorian to 1940’s era of P.T. Barnum and The Ringling Brothers when they were filled with so called human curiosities like Myrtle Corbin, the four legged woman.  Chang and Ed Bunker, the first documented Siamese Twins.  And my personal favourite, Robert Wadlow, the worlds tallest man.  So you can imagine me delight when I  found this in the basement markets at Pike Place:

OHHHHH!!!!  I actually squealed when I saw it.  Of course I had to have a peep!  Who doesn’t want to see a giant shoe of mystery!!!?

I highly suggest you visit Seattle!  The food is great, the coffee is better (seriously, it’s the first thing a Seattlite will talk to you about) and the people are friendly.  I have never had so many people say hi to me in the street.  It was so refreshing.  And the people are so complimentary.  I got so many nice compliments on my outfits from men a woman alike.  One guy even said “the awesomeness of your outfit gave him more purpose in life”!  HA!  Love it!

Well that’s it for Seattle (booooo).  Next stop: Portland.  YAY!!!

*hugs*

Clara

P.S.  I would also recommend our hostel in Seattle, City Hostel.  It was clean with fast wifi and excellent free breakfast, including some of that famous Seattle coffee!
